Kick off Fall with fun pet store events in Colorado

As you know, our entire team has been really excited about the debut of our new formulations Precise Holistic Complete. I’m happy to report that one of the retailers I work with in Colorado will debut the line at its annual Fantastic Fall Sale. This will be the first chance for customers in Colorado to buy PHC, and I can’t wait to see the brand new packaging on the shelves.

You can join in on the fun at Pet Palace, located at 4094 S. Parker Road in Aurora, Colo. The Fantastic Fall Sale will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10.  The best part? The entire Precise Holistic Complete line will be in stock, and during the event you can get $3 off per bag. I’ll be there on Sunday, so be sure to say hello!

Another fun event for Colorado pet owners planned for early October is Sweeny’s West’s Customer Appreciation Day. Located at 621 East Enterprise Drive in Pueblo West, Colo., the store will have some good (human!) food and raffles from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9th.

Ask Our Vet: Feeding lab puppies

Q: Which puppy food is best for my Yellow Lab? Precise Large and Giant Breed Puppy formula, or the Small to Medium formula? What makes one better than the other?

A: Labs are considered to be large breed puppies, so I would actually recommend the Precise Holistic Complete Large and Giant Breed Puppy formula for your puppy to best prevent growth issues. None of our puppy foods are better than the others, they are just formulated to meet the needs of different kinds of puppies.

Our on-staff veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela is on-hand to answer questions about your dog or cat’s health. Whether you’re wondering about the best Precise formula or just have a general health question, visit the Ask the Vet section here on the website to connect directly with Dr. Drapela. We’ll feature some of her answers here on the blog.

Second annual Adopt-A-Pet event in Tampa, Fla.

The largest pet adoption event in the state of Florida kicks off Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Tampa’s University of Southern Florida Sundome. More than 10,000 people are expected to come out to see more than 1,000 dogs and cats available for adoption from over 60 rescue groups. The event will have free admission and free parking, and you’ll also be able to check out vendors, grab refreshments, listen to music and win door prizes.

Speaking of vendors, my friend and Precise retailer Nikole Yahre from Pawsome Adventures in Lutz, Fla. will have a booth at the event. She’ll have free samples of Precise to give away, so stop by to learn more about her full-service boarding facility and doggy daycare. If you live in the Lutz area, Pawsome Adventures is a great place to pick up Precise food – they will even deliver it to you!

Fifty wackiest pet names of 2010

Not only do we enjoy browsing through the photos in our Pet Zone Image Gallery, we love seeing what Precise customers name their pets. Looking through our photos today, I found Maple, Mischa, KaChow and Xena. Here’s a photo of Maple:

Those are pretty unique for pet names, but they don’t come anywhere close to the Fifty Wackiest Pet Names of 2010, a list put together each year by Veterinary Pet Insurance. VPI’s employees peruse its database of nearly 500,000 insured pets, looking for names that go beyond Fluffy and Lady.

Day one at SuperZoo

Day one of SuperZoo has come to an end, and what a day it was here at booth #2523. We’ve been able to connect with retailers, distributors and media, in addition to old and new friends. We were easy to spot in our bright green shirts, and our booth looked like you stepped straight into our website, complete with a blue sky, grass floor and park bench.

In addition to checking out our Twitterwall, visiting with “The Great Dane Lady” Linda Arndt and seeing our new Precise Holistic Complete packaging, you can stop by our booth for samples and enter to win a bale of 6-pound Precise Holistic Complete bags.  We’ll pick six winners a day each day at 4:30 p.m.

With a little help from team members Ron Pierle and Jess Redman, we drew our first batch of winners Tuesday. Watch below to see who won:

Congrats to the following retailers – we’ll be in touch and ship your prizes to you soon!

Ask Our Vet: Puppy food

Q: Could you please recommend an appropriate dry food for my 8-month-old White Shepherd? He has no known food allergies and is in good health.

A: First, I’d consider a few questions. Has your “puppy” reached an adult skeletal size already or is he still growing?  Second, what are you feeding right now and how much?

If your puppy has yet to reach full size but is getting close, I recommend the Precise Large and Giant Breed Puppy formula.  I assume your dog will be 50 pounds or over at full-size, and this is the best formula for those puppies.  You can stay on this formula while he continues to grow – usually about 12 months of age – and then you can go to adult food.

Use the feeding directions on the back of the bag as a guide as to how much to feed, but then use his stools as an indicator for whether you should feed more or less.  If he seems hungry after eating and his stools are firm, try adding ¼ cup to the next feeding.  If his stools are loose, cut back ¼ cup at a time until they return to normal.
