Ask Our Vet: Switching from puppy to adult pet food

Q: I have a 13-month-old, 6-pound Shih Tzu. She has been eating Precise Plus Puppy, with a little Precise canned food made into a gravy. Should I switch her to the Small Medium Breed Puppy formula?

A: Once you finish the current bag of Precise Plus Puppy, you can switch to one of the adult foods such as Precise Plus Canine Adult formula.  Some people choose to start mixing in the adult formula with the last few feedings of the puppy food, but it isn’t necessary.  They are both formulated similarly so the transition should be an easy one.

Our on-staff veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela is on-hand to answer questions about your dog or cat’s health. Whether you’re wondering about the best Precise formula or just have a general health question, visit the Ask the Vet section here on the website to connect directly with Dr. Drapela. We’ll feature some of her answers here on the blog.

H.H. Backer Christmas show wrap-up

It’s only October, but pet retailers are already thinking about stocking their stores with the best products in the pet industry for the holiday shopping season. My colleagues and I made our ways to Chicago for the annual H.H. Backer Christmas show last weekend and had a great time catching up with old and new friends.

We had a lot of fun things planned, and saw a great response from retailers in attendance – especially about our eye-catching new packaging for Precise Holistic Complete. Check it out for yourself:

Photo Roundup: Precise Holistic Complete displays

We’re proud that our formulations are featured in great independent pet stores across the country. After we launched Precise Holistic Complete earlier this year, we couldn’t wait until it hit their shelves.

Now that photos of store displays are rolling in, we wanted to share them with you here on The Dish. We even started a Flickr photo set of Precise Pet retailers – check it out here.

Below are a few photos from my sales region in the Western part of the country.

Quality Time: An Introduction

Sitting outside of our on-site Quality Assurance Laboratory in Nacogdoches, Texas, there’s a single park bench similar to the one you’ll find at the bottom of our website, precisepet.com:

It doesn’t get a lot of use, since we take food safety and quality very serious here at Precise and are always busy in the lab. We have a team of people working to make sure our food is safe for our customers’ pets, and quality pet food begins with quality ingredients.

As vice-president of operations for Texas Farm Products, the parent company of Precise Pet, I am responsible for the operations, quality assurance and nutritional content of our pet food. I’ve been with Texas Farm Products for more than 30 years. I began working at here part-time in high school, loading feed onto customer trucks as orders were received.

After attending college, I returned as laboratory supervisor and became VP of operations in 2005. I currently serve on the regulatory affairs committee of the Pet Food Institute and the nutrition council of the American Feed Industry Association.

Here on The Dish, I’m going to introduce you to the stringent safety measures we take to make our food the best. I look forward to sharing with you about our commitment to quality and nutrition.

Mailbag: Shelf life of Precise

Each month, Marnee White, who knows Precise like the back of her hand, will answer questions we get through our customer service e-mails and phone calls.

Q: What is the shelf life of Precise food?

A: Our formulations have a shelf life of 18 months. You can find a “Best if used by” date on every bag. The first date will denote the “use by” date (below, Jan. 11, 2012), and the date following “MFG.” tells you when it was produced:

H.H. Backer Christmas show

To kick off October, our team is getting geared up for the H.H. Backer Christmas show next week. Along with myself, Liz Morken, Mike Jones and Jon Burkhardt will be in Chicago Oct. 8-10 for the event. If you’ll be in town, stop by booth #2043 to see our new Precise Holistic Complete line.

We’ll have the same booth we had at SuperZoo, so you’ll know you’ve found us when you see clouds and grass:

Here are a few of the fun things you’ll find at our booth:

  • We’ll have the entire new Precise Holistic Complete line at our booth. Stop by to learn all about its one-of-a-kind features and ingredients, such as sustainable DHAgold® omega-3s to support cognitive learning, and probiotic Bacillus coagulans to aid digestion.
  • Get a feel for the new bags, which feature side handles for easier carrying and pouring, and slide-closure tops.
  • In addition to our new product line, we’ll also have samples and giveaways at the booth.

We hope to see you there!
