Ask Our Vet: Systemic Yeast Infections

Q: I would like to switch my dog to Precise dog food, but I can’t decide to which one. I am deciding between Chicken Meal & Rice Foundation, Chicken Meal & Rice and Lamb Meal & Rice Sensicare.

I need to mention that my dog has Systemic Yeast Infection. I read that the Lamb Meal is for dogs with allergies, but I was thinking that it might be also good choice for a dog with Systemic Yeast Infection. Which one of the three would you recommend?

A: Good question. The main difference between the Foundation and Sensicare products is the meat source. The Sensicare formula was designed for dogs that had allergies to chicken, but I think it would be a great food to try for your dog with a systemic yeast infection. That would be my first choice if my dog had this problem.

Our on-staff veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela is on-hand to answer questions about your dog or cat’s health. Recap: Tagawa Gardens holiday event

A couple weeks ago, I told you about the Holiday Gifts for Pets and Their People event held at Tagawa Gardens in Centennial, Colo.

The event was a big success, and I had a great time. I sold several bags of new Precise Holistic Complete and passed out plenty of samples. In fact, one customer took home two bags of PHC Large Breed Adult with her on Saturday, and on Sunday she came back for another 30 lb. bag. It didn’t take her pet long to decide he liked this new line!

In between chatting with all of my booth’s visitors, I was able to snap a few photos:

Quality Time: Salmonella Prevention

Mike Compton is vice president of operations at Precise’s parent company, Texas Farm Products Company, and is responsible for the operations, quality assurance and nutritional content of our pet food. Each month on the blog, he shares how we keep our pet food safe and healthy. Read past Quality Time blog posts here.

Here at Precise, we hold our pet food to the highest safety standards and perform routine tests to ensure its safety. One of the tests we perform regularly is Salmonella testing.

Salmonella is more of a danger to humans than pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association has an article called “Frequently Asked Questions about Dry Pet Foods and Salmonella. It reports 79 cases of human Salmonella infection from 2006-2008 associated with contaminated dry dog and cat food.

We take stringent measures at our plant in Nacogdoches, Texas, by doing regular tests for the bacteria using sterilized sponges with a special solution on the end. Wearing a sterilized glove, we swab a 12-inch by 12-inch area. Our very specific schedule includes:

  • Weekly swabs of key plant areas.
  • Monthly swabs of less susceptible areas.
  • Quarterly swabs of all areas of the plant, including telephones, break rooms and drains.

You can see the different swabs in the photo below:
