Retailer Spotlight: Chuck & Don’s Pet Food Outlet

In our Retailer Spotlight blog posts, our team will take a closer look into some of the outstanding retailers across the country that sell Precise. We love all of our retailers and the services they bring to our customers!

I always enjoy stopping in at Chuck & Don’s Pet Food Outlet, a 15-store chain in Minnesota’s Twin Cities area. The stores have seen terrific growth over the past few years, and I’m honored to say I’ve been working with the store and its owners since it started out with just two locations. Even as it continues to grow – with a new store opening soon in Denver, Colo. – the name Chuck & Don’s means quality and customer service for pet owners in this area.

After some of our recent snowfall melted away, I stopped by the St. Paul store at Highland Park to take this photo:

The story behind Chuck and Don’s is a good one. Between owning, training and showing German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Schipperkes, Border Collies and mixed breeds, Chuck Anderson and Don Tauer became friends and decided to open the first Chuck & Don’s Pet Food Outlet store in 1990. The pair became a go-to source for pet owners in Minnesota, and opened many more retail locations while staying true to their local area. Don retired in 2000, and Bob Hartzell joined the team.

The stores’ goals stayed the same, however, as described on their website:

Chuck and Bob have a vision to be the local destination home town pet supply store with excellent customer service, a wide and broad selection of products, and competitive pricing. Chuck & Don’s Pet Food Outlet is locally owned and the income generated by our business stays in Minnesota. We look for growth opportunities upwards of twenty stores by 2015, and hope to see you in one of our stores sometime soon, as pets continue to bring us together.

Ingredient Insight: DHAgold®

We’re very proud of the premium ingredients found in our foods. In our Ingredient Insight series, our in-house vet Dr. Lisa Drapela provides an in-depth look at how these ingredients protect and boost your pets’ health and energy, why we chose them and what makes them unique. Read all of our Ingredient Insight blog posts here.

You may already be familiar with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), a common human food additive found in a range of grocery store items such as infant formulas, juices, tortillas, milk and yogurt. The omega-3 fatty acid is used to promote healthy brain functions, especially in young children.

When developing our new Precise Holistic Complete canine formulas, we wanted to include human-grade ingredients that provide dogs with the most advanced nutrition available. That’s why you’ll find the animal nutrition form of DHA, DHAgold®, in all of our Precise Holistic Complete canine foods. In fact, Precise Holistic Complete is the only dog food with DHAgold®, noted by this logo on our packaging:

What is DHA?
DHA is an unsaturated omega-3 fatty acid critical for healthy brain and eye development and function, that supports heart health throughout all life stages. Omega-3’s are most abundant in neural, retinal and cardiovascular conducting tissues, and help facilitate synaptic transmission. More than 97 percent of all omega-3’s in the brain are DHA.

What is DHAgold®?
DHAgold® is a human-grade supplement that provides DHA, to promote cognitive performance and trainability. It is made straight from the algae that give fish so many healthful fatty acids. Since DHAgold® algae is grown in a closed environment rather than harvested from the ocean, it is also sustainable.

How does DHAgold® help canine development?
While other omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) help only with inflammation and cardiovascular functions, DHAgold® supports a range of health factors:

  • Cognitive development and function
  • Visual development and function
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Supports cardiovascular health

Want to know even more? While we were at SuperZoo earlier this year, we took a moment to speak with Christian Martin, director of animal nutrition at DHAgold’s parent company Martek Biosciences. To learn more about this ingredient, check out the interview below:
