Ingredient Insight: Orange citrus fiber

We’re very proud of the premium ingredients found in our foods. In our Ingredient Insight series, our in-house vet Dr. Lisa Drapela provides an in-depth look at how these ingredients protect and boost your pets’ health and energy, why we chose them and what makes them unique. Read all of our Ingredient Insight blog posts here.

Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet. That’s why our new formula, Precise Holistic Complete (PHC), has many sources of fiber including brown rice, oatmeal, flaxseed and rice bran.

In addition to these sources, PHC also has citrus fiber, a 100 percent natural, chemical-free product that provides an optimal balance of both insoluble and soluble fiber. It is high in antioxidants and provides a food source for the beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract, without compromising taste. Citrus fiber, which is also used in the human food market, is a great alternative to beet pulp to supply the necessary levels of fiber that promote health and vitality in pets.

According to studies, citrus fiber provides 1.75 times more antioxidants than blueberries, reduces calories and net carbs, and increases dietary fiber.

Citrus fiber is derived from the pulp of oranges and grapefruit, not from the fruit itself. Oil, sugar, water and seeds are extracted from the fruits’ peels, leaving only the fiber. This means the citrus fiber is inert and does not contain the delimonens and sugars found in juice. Additionally, since citrus fiber doesn’t have any similarities or characteristics of grapefruit juice, it will not affect any medications that a dog or cat would be taking.

Ask Our Vet: Adult food for puppies?

Q: I am getting an 11-week-old Newfie puppy at the end of the month from a breeder. I was told to switch to adult food at six months, due to the high calorie and protein content of puppy food and Newfies’ slow metabolisms. Is this sound advice?

A: I do not like large and giant breed puppies to be fed adult foods if there is another alternative. The main reason I do not recommend this is because of the calcium to phosphorus ratio when factored for caloric content that the puppy needs to consume.

Please take a look at our Precise Holistic Complete Large and Giant Breed Puppy formula. You will see that the protein is actually lower than our adult food while the calcium to phosphorus ratio is maintained. If you are looking for a good puppy food, I think this one is best for your Newfie.

Our on-staff veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela is on-hand to answer questions about your dog or cat’s health. Whether you’re wondering about the best Precise formula or just have a general health question, visit the Ask the Vet section here on the website to connect directly with Dr. Drapela. We’ll feature some of her answers here on the blog.

The Great Dane Lady, Linda Arndt, has more than 38 years of experience as a canine nutritional consultant and breeder. In our Great Dane Lady Approved series, Linda will talk about her research and work with Precise. You can explore Linda’s website at

This past January, I had the exciting opportunity to organize a seminar for the Muncie, Anderson and Marion Kennel Clubs in Indiana. The Canine Synergy Health Seminar focused on mind, body and spirit of our pets’ wellness. The seven presenters, myself included, provided the latest information on Holistic animal nutrition as well as new technologies available to pet owners, such as aquatic therapy, massage and behavior rehabilitation. I spoke specifically on nutrition and the philosophy of wellness.

Here are some comments the presenters shared with me after the seminar:

  • “Thanks to you for putting it on this amazing seminar and allowing me to participate. I know it exceeded my expectations! What a great group of people!” Dr.Teresa Calvert, Westview Animal Clinic
  • “Just got home from the Canine Health Seminar and all I have to say is, it was AWESOME!!! Seriously, it was one of the BEST dog events I have ever been a part of. Great job!” Ferreh Hiatt, Waylon Australian Shepherds
  • “I was so honored to be part of this amazing seminar. I also love your passion for these animals and know that the Precise food line is the best. I will work my booty off, and hope to help the company grow this fine line of foods. Have a good day. God Bless!” Brian Gagye, Special O.P.S. K-9 Training Academy
  • “I have attended many seminars, workshops, etc. and yesterday was one of the very most special! What a forever memory – what a wonderful energy in the room, what a treasure for our souls! Thank you Linda!” Pam, Joshica’s Planet Canine, LLC

Overall, the seminar was a huge success with 67 breeders in attendance! Thanks to all of our presenters and attendees. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Mailbag: QR codes on Precise bags

Each month, Marnee White, who knows Precise like the back of her hand, will answer questions we get through our customer service e-mails and phone calls.

Q: What is the square bar code on your pet food bags?

A: The square, black and white bar code on our bags is a QR code:

A QR code is a type of bar code invented to encrypt information that could be quickly decoded. If you have a smartphone and a bar code reader application on that phone, you can scan the QR code on our bags and access our homepage.

If you’re new to QR codes, here’s how they work:

  • Download a bar code reader such as NeoReader to your smartphone.
  • Open the app and follow instructions to scan the code using your phone’s camera.
  • The app will scan the code and take you to our Precise Holistic Complete web page, where you can learn more about its healthy, human-grade ingredients and our range of formulas.

We included this code on our bags to better inform our customers and anyone interested in our pet food. We hope it helps you learn more about Precise and why we think we are a great option for your pets.
