Ask Our Vet: Switching foods can cause stomach upset

Q: I started my two Bichon puppies on a new canned food and soon after eating, the female had very loose stool and seemed to be in pain. Do you think switching food caused the problem?

A: Yes, the switch to another food is likely what caused the loose stool. This is common when making the transition to a new food and should resolve itself after a few days. If it doesn’t, talk to your veterinarian to make sure there isn’t something more serious going on.

Visit our post on how to safely transition your pet to a different food.

Our on-staff veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela is on-hand to answer questions about your dog or cat’s health. Whether you’re wondering about the best Precise formula or just have a general health question, visit the Ask Our Vet section here on the website to connect directly with Dr. Drapela. Ingredient Insight: Real meat

We’re very proud of the premium ingredients found in our foods. In our Ingredient Insight series, our in-house vet Dr. Lisa Drapela provides an in-depth look at how these ingredients protect and boost your pets’ health and energy, why we chose them, and what makes them unique. Read all of our Ingredient Insight blog posts here.

Here at Precise we pride ourselves in using real meat in our formulas. When you read “meal” on our labels, it does not mean by-products.  Meal is concentrated nutrition made from highly digestible protein from muscle meat. We use a variety of sources including chicken, duck, turkey, salmon and lamb. For example, our salmon meal serves as a high-quality protein source that provides optimum levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

Our chicken products (meal, chicken fat, chicken flavor) all originate from birds that are raised with the same standards and practices as those raised for human consumption.

Our chicken products come from Arkansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma, while our lamb meal is from New Zealand.  Our duck products come from Italy and our fresh-caught salmon in Precise Holistic Complete is imported from Norway.

Ask Our Vet: What is a good food for a dog with epilepsy?

Q: I have a dog that is epileptic. What is a good dog food for him and are there any ingredients I need to watch out for?

A: I think any of our foods that fit your dog’s exercise level would be fine. For example, if your adult dog is young and active, you might feed the Precise Plus Adult formula. Or, the Precise Holistic Complete Wild at Heart formulas are formulated for all life stages, so you can feed them to a dog of any age.

There are some specific ingredients that can cause your dog’s seizures. Additionally, I have read that changing foods could be a trigger for some dog’s seizures. Exercise caution when changing food, and be sure to consult your regular veterinarian first.

Our on-staff veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela is on-hand to answer questions about your dog or cat’s health. Whether you’re wondering about the best Precise formula or just have a general health question, visit the Ask Our Vet section here on the website to connect directly with Dr. Drapela. Quality Time: Ingredient sourcing

Mike Compton is vice president of operations at Precise’s parent company, Texas Farm Products Company, and is responsible for the operations, quality assurance and nutritional content of our pet food. Each month on the blog, he shares how we keep our pet food safe and healthy. Read past Quality Time blog posts here.

Curious about where ingredients found in Precise pet food are sourced? We’re happy to explain.

All of our products are naturally preserved and come from trusted distributors. Our chicken products (meal, chicken fat, chicken flavor) all originate from birds that are raised with the same standards and practices as those raised for human consumption.

Many ingredients (vegetables and fruits) found in Precise Holistic Complete also come from the same sources that stock your local grocery store. Additionally, the grains used are purchased based on specific USDA standards. When they are received, we check them very closely to make sure they meet our standards before we even unload them from the truck!

Our chicken products come from Arkansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma, while our lamb meal is from New Zealand.  Our duck products come from Italy. Our fresh-caught salmon in Precise Holistic Complete is imported from Norway. Additionally, the grains and botanicals we use are both of U.S. origin.
