I am presently feeding your Holistic Complete Small and Medium Breed Adult to my 2 Standard Poodles. Would there be an advantage to transitioning them to the Lamb & Turkey Meal Grain Free Formula? I see the ME is greater in the Grain Free. I guess it comes down to which formula has better ingredients. Since I’m not an expert on the subtleties of the ingredients in one food vs. another, I am relying on you for this information and guidance.

  2. Hello Mike, thanks for your question. I passed it along to Linda Arndt, The Great Dane Lady, and here is her response:

Honestly, it is not a matter of one type of food being superior over the other. It is simply a matter of what fits your pet’s needs. I have found that dogs fed a meat-based kibble with healthy whole grains (where the fiber is intact), grains that have a low glycemic index and no or low gluten, are just as good as a grain free diet. Now, any dog can eat a grain free diet, but there are other needs in which it is particularly good, such as for dogs who are diabetic, have systemic yeast overgrowth or perhaps allergies, or dog that do not do well on a grain component. Again, it is the TYPE and QUALITY of the grain that is significant, and it must be whole ground grain with fiber intact. Precise pays great attention to this in their diets! Oats have important nutrients such as oat beta glucans (which help to fight cancer) and brown rice has rice bran, which is a superior antioxidant that detoxifies the body. These grains were chosen not as a filler but for the nutrient contribution. Plus real working dogs do better on a diet that has a carbohydrate component from quality whole grains. Now to your question – if your dogs are not out there hunting, herding or doing hard work, then you have the luxury of using either food. You can also rotate between them, either daily or changing once the bag is used up. That is what I like to recommend and what I do with my dogs. You can feed a bag of the Small & Medium Breed Adult, then the next bag can be a Grain Free and then the next bag you get can be perhaps one of the Wild At Heart Duck – Duck and Turkey or Salmon. Also for variety Precise has several types of canned formulas, including their new Grain Free. The good thing about the Precise lineup is I have never had problems with going back and forth between foods because the quality of the ingredients is top of the line, regardless of which Precise pet food you buy. The company does not cheapen the food just because it is not part of the Holistic Complete Line or Grain Free; the ingredient quality is the same in everything they make. That is why there is not one food that is better than another in the Precise lineup. It is a matter of what your dogs needs are at this time.
