Ask Our Vet: Do any of the Precise formulas include taurine and L-carnitine?

Q: Hi, I’ve heard that taurine and L-carnitine are essential for a dog’s diet. Do any of the Precise formulas include those ingredients? Thank you.

A: Thank you for your email. Taurine and L-carnitine are what I call, conditionally essential nutrients for dogs. Dogs can make both taurine and L-carnitine but some do not make enough. Genetics play a large role in the deficiency of these components. I have included links on the topic that I think might help:

Pet Education

All the precursors to taurine and L-carnitine are found in meats and all of the Precise foods are meat-based. The only reason to supplement with more would be for an animal that has a genetic deficiency. It is for a reason that we have added taurine and L-carnitine to some of the Precise Holistic Complete formulas such as the Large & Giant Breed Adult, Large & Giant Breed Puppy, and Senior.

Ask Our Vet: Can my dog with chicken allergies eat the new Grain Free formula?

Q: My dog is diagnosed with a chicken allergy. Would he be able to eat the Grain Free – Pork line even though it contains chicken cartilage and fat? Thank you!

A: As you probably already know, the proteins in chickens are what predominantly cause allergic reactions because they are such large molecules. The chicken fat does not contain any protein so you are safe giving it a dog with a chicken allergy. This is why we use chicken fat in our Precise Lamb Meal & Rice Sensicare Formula.

The chicken cartilage is MOSTLY free from protein but not completely. Depending on how allergic your dog is, you may want to avoid any of our foods with chicken cartilage in them.

Ask Our Vet: What’s the difference between the Wild at Heart and regular Precise Holistic Complete formulas?

Q: I currently own a 7-month-old English Mastiff that loves the Large & Giant Breed Adult formula, but I’m curious to know more about the Wild at Heart formulas. What’s the difference between the Wild at Heart formulas and the regular Precise Holistic Complete formulas?

A: There are two main differences between the Wild at Heart formulas and the regular Precise Holistic Complete breed formulas. The Wild at Heart formulas contain less protein content versus the regular Precise Holistic Complete formulas, which consist of two or more protein sources.

Additionally, the Wild at Heart formulas were meant to be fed to any breed of almost any age, which is not true for some of the other Precise Holistic Complete formulas. Visit the Precise Holistic Complete page to learn more.

Pet Tales: Precise is helping Molly get fit!

Here at Precise, we want to hear from our community. Our Pet Tales blog posts come directly from customers who have submitted stories about their experience with Precise products. Click here to share your own story.

Ella Poczynok writes:

My 11-year-old dog, Molly, is my seventh dog. All six of my previous companions have suffered from obesity. Even though I have fed them what their veterinarians recommended and exercised them daily, they all gained too much weight. Questioning my vets about what could cause the weight gain always seemed to elicit the response that it was my fault somehow. Questions about the dog food brought on the response, “No, it can’t be that.”

A few months ago, I was talking with someone and she told me about your brand and what a difference it made in her dog. I researched Precise Pet Products and was amazed by what I found. I bought a bag of the Chicken Meal and Rice Formula, even though it was more expensive and I am on a fixed income. By the time the bag was finished, I was amazed by the results! Molly is perkier, more alert and active, and she’s losing weight!

It is so cruel to feed dogs a pet food that harms them when the solution is out there. I just wanted to say I wish I had known about Precise Pet Products earlier so my other dogs would have been healthier and happier. Molly and I both want to thank you for your great products.

Thank you, Ella and Molly! We are glad to hear that Molly is doing well!

Ask Our Vet: Does my senior dog need a formula with L-carnitine?

Q: I currently own several dogs ranging in ages from a 1-year-old puppy to aging seniors. I was told that my older dogs needed L-carnitine in their diets to help promote healthy hearts. I noticed that the Original Precise Senior Formula didn’t contain L-carnitine. What is your opinion on L-carnitine and what formula do you recommend for my senior dogs?

A: Thanks for your question! You’re correct that L-carnitine is not in the Original Precise Senior formula, but L-carnitine is in the Precise Holistic Complete Senior formula.

As you probably know, L-carnitine is not an essential component of dog foods because most dogs have the ability to internally produce the supplement. However, it is important for some dogs to have L-carnitine because their bodies cannot make enough of the supplement. The problem is, we don’t always know which dogs can make enough L-carnitine.

I recommend the Precise Holistic Complete Senior formula, particularly for your older dogs. If you decide to choose the Original Precise Senior formula, I would definitely recommend supplementating with L-carnitine.

Mailbag: What should I feed my dog if it’s battling yeast conditions?

Each month, Marnee White, who knows Precise like the back of her hand, will answer questions we get through our customer service e-mails and phone calls.

Q: What should I feed my dog if it’s battling yeast conditions?

A: We recommend any of our formulas that DO NOT contain potato, as potato will aggravate the yeast problem.
