Ask Our Vet: Do any of the Precise formulas include taurine and L-carnitine?

Q: Hi, I’ve heard that taurine and L-carnitine are essential for a dog’s diet. Do any of the Precise formulas include those ingredients? Thank you.

A: Thank you for your email. Taurine and L-carnitine are what I call, conditionally essential nutrients for dogs. Dogs can make both taurine and L-carnitine but some do not make enough. Genetics play a large role in the deficiency of these components. I have included links on the topic that I think might help:

All the precursors to taurine and L-carnitine are found in meats and all of the Precise foods are meat-based. The only reason to supplement with more would be for an animal that has a genetic deficiency. It is for a reason that we have added taurine and L-carnitine to some of the Precise Holistic Complete formulas such as the Large & Giant Breed Adult, Large & Giant Breed Puppy, and Senior.

  1. Linda says:

Which food is best for a dog with colitis? My dog vomits a lot and also has allergies to oak and pollen.

  2. Hi Linda,

Thank you for your question. The cause of the colitis will usually dictate the treatment and diet needed. Some dogs do well with higher fiber diets and some do better with hypoallergenic diets. In order to help you make a decision on which food formula would be best, we would need to know more about the case and treatment history. In order to do so, we would like to put you in contact with our in-house veterinarian Dr. Lisa Drapela. Please follow this link to contact her: http://precisepet.com/pet-zone/ask-our-vet/

Let us know if we can be of any additional help. Thanks again, Linda!
